A Comprehensive Survey on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications

Slope stability analysis is commonly performed using limit equilibrium methods LEM. In LEM, factor of safety FS is calculated for different trial slip surfaces and the one with the minimum FS is reported as the critical slip surface. Since locating the critical slip surface is believed to Computer Aided Slope Stability Staff View. Full description Saved in:. TA Engineering General. Civil engineering General. Civil engineering General Slope stability analysis is commonly performed using limit equilibrium methods LEM.

Since locating the critical slip surface is believed to be an NP-hard non-deterministic polynomialtime problem, heuristic global optimization techniques are employed. According to the NFL theorems, no heuristic optimization technique can perform well for all problems. On the other hand, there may exist other slip surfaces that are as important as the critical slip surface in practical analyses.

A slip surface is important, if it is located far away from the critical slip surface, but gives FS close to the minimum FS or the consequences of failure along the slip surface is serious. Therefore, there is a need to constantly implement and test different optimization techniques. However, implementation of optimization techniques in slope stability analysis is often not straightforward because it requires internal links to LEM. Firstly, the present study resolves this issue by developing a decoupled algorithm that allows for easy implementation of optimization techniques.

A Comprehensive Survey on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications

This site features information about discrete event system modeling and simulation. It includes discussions on descriptive simulation modeling, programming commands, techniques for sensitivity estimation, optimization and goal-seeking by simulation, and what-if analysis. Advancements in computing power, availability of PC-based modeling and simulation, and efficient computational methodology are allowing leading-edge of prescriptive simulation modeling such as optimization to pursue investigations in systems analysis, design, and control processes that were previously beyond reach of the modelers and decision makers.

Particle swarm optimization PSO is a heuristic global optimization method, proposed originally by Kennedy and Eberhart in It is now one of the most commonly used optimization techniques. This survey presented a comprehensive investigation of PSO. On the other hand, we offered a survey on applications of PSO to the following eight fields: electrical and electronic engineering, automation control systems, communication theory, operations research, mechanical engineering, fuel and energy, medicine, chemistry, and biology.

This paper proposed a new method to determine the minimum slope safety factor which is the determination of slope safety factor with analytical solution and searching critical slip surface with Genetic-Traversal Random Method. The Genetic-Traversal Random Method uses random pick to utilize mutation. A computer automatic search program is developed for the Genetic-Traversal Random Method. However the obtained minimum safety factor with Genetic-Traversal Random Search Method is very close to the lower bound solutions of slope safety factor given by the Ansys software. In order to reduce the influence of the assumptions made in limit equilibrium methods on the factor of safety, the methods of limit analysis based on the rigid body plasticity theory were developed by Chen , Michalowski , and Donald and Chen
