Hypnosis is a human condition involving focused attention , reduced peripheral awareness, and an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestion. There are competing theories explaining hypnosis and related phenomena. Altered state theories see hypnosis as an altered state of mind or trance , marked by a level of awareness different from the ordinary state of consciousness. During hypnosis, a person is said to have heightened focus and concentration. The use of hypnotism for therapeutic purposes is referred to as " hypnotherapy ", while its use as a form of entertainment for an audience is known as " stage hypnosis ," a form of mentalism. Hypnosis for pain management "is likely to decrease acute and chronic pain in most individuals". Research indicates that hypnotising an individual may aid the formation of false memories, and that hypnosis "does not help people recall events more accurately".

Hypnosis and heavy smartphone use are both characterised by absorbed states in which one loses track of time and responds automatically to stimuli. Over 11 public lectures, we hypnotised student-aged participants; after the hypnosis session, participants completed the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version. This correlation was small but unlikely spurious: it was positive in 10 of the 11 samples including two from psychology courses and persisted in a follow-up several months later. We hypothesise that targeting the absorbed, time-distorted, and automatic use of smartphones may promote healthier phone habits.

Metrics details. Although medical interventions play an important role in preserving lives and maternal comfort they have become increasingly routine in normal childbirth. This may increase the risk of associated complications and a less satisfactory birth experience. Antenatal hypnosis is associated with a reduced need for pharmacological interventions during childbirth.

The work reported in this monograph was done, as occasion arose, in the period between February and May As the experiments progressed, the findings led to speculation concerning their significance and possible implications. So intriguing were some of the questions raised that, rather than attempting to study exhaustively any single one of them, a number of pilot experiments involving different problems were carried out. In other words it was, in a sense, like making a series of -short exploratory trips in various directions into a strange land. It is the hope of the authors that this presentation may stimulate others to venture further.
Time Distortion in Hypnosis: An Experimental and Clinical Investigation. By Linn F. Cooper, M.D., and Milton H. Erickson, M.A., M.D., with a foreword by Harold.
Barber and Mr. Cooper and Erickson 17 suggested to selected "deep trance" subjects that a brief interval would seem as if it were a long period of time. The subjects agreed that time seemed to go slowly and that seconds seemed like minutes or hours. Such apparent verbal agreement with the suggestions of the hypnotist is not surprising; it is a relatively commonplace occurrence in hypnotic experiments. Cooper and Erickson maintained, however, that the subjects in these experiments did not merely agree verbally with the experimenter but "actually experienced" a brief interval as an extended period of time. In support of this contention they presented a series of studies in which "deeply hypnotized" subjects were told to perform various mental activities with the suggestion that seconds would seem to be minutes or hours. One subject testified that during an allotted one-second interval he saw a basketball game from beginning.
The aim of this review is to summarize data published on the use of perioperative hypnosis in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery BCS. Indeed, the majority of BCS patients experience stress, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, and pain. Correct management of the perioperative period and surgical removal of the primary tumor are clearly essential but can affect patients on different levels and hence have a negative impact on oncological outcomes. This review examines the effect of clinical hypnosis performed during the perioperative period.
