Methodological Phenomenology: Edmund Husserl
I would like to thank the director of the Husserl-Archives in Leuven, Prof. Because they have no interest for me. My experience is what I agree to attend to. If this were the case, experiencing would occur neither beyond nor apart from attentive interest. What currently falls beyond the scope of my attentive interest would not be experienced, nor would any experiencing continue when all interested occupation has ceded. Interest alone gives accent and emphasis, light and shade, background and foreground — intelligible perspective, in a word. It varies in every creature, but without it the consciousness of every creature would be a gray chaotic indiscriminateness.
Phenomenology of consciousness in Adi Samkara and Edmund Husserl. Surya Kanta Maharana. The philosophical investigation of consciousness has a long-standing history in both Indian and Western thought. The conceptual models and analyses that have emerged in one cultural framework may be profitably reviewed in the light of another. The starting point for this paper is the belief that phenomenology has a recognizably common face for both these traditions.
The tradition of analytic philosophy has many concerns, but one theme is clearly deep and central. Philosophy in this tradition is about meaning, the analysis of meaning. Meaning is expressed in language, and modern logic articulates structures of language that carry meaning however conceived—intensionally, extensionally, pragmatically. Where we see the role of meaning analysis in the history of analytic philosophy, we should see the role of phenomenology in that history. While logical theory dominated much of analytic philosophy in the first half of the twentieth century, philosophy of mind has dominated much of analytic philosophy in the latter part of the twentieth century.
It then spread to France , the United States , and elsewhere, often in contexts far removed from Husserl's early work. Phenomenology is not a unified movement; rather, different authors share a common family resemblance but also with many significant differences. Gabriella Farina states:. A unique and final definition of phenomenology is dangerous and perhaps even paradoxical as it lacks a thematic focus. In fact, it is not a doctrine, nor a philosophical school, but rather a style of thought, a method, an open and ever-renewed experience having different results, and this may disorient anyone wishing to define the meaning of phenomenology.
(3) He speaks of the “constitution” (phenomenological, intentional, egological) of “objects,” of “self,” of “experience,” of. “temporality,” of “meaning” and of “being”;.
Phenomenology is the study of structures of consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of view. The central structure of an experience is its intentionality, its being directed toward something, as it is an experience of or about some object. An experience is directed toward an object by virtue of its content or meaning which represents the object together with appropriate enabling conditions. Phenomenology as a discipline is distinct from but related to other key disciplines in philosophy, such as ontology, epistemology, logic, and ethics.
From the latter he took over the conception of philosophy as an exact science, and in the process he too made the turn from object to mental act. Unable to display preview. Download preview PDF. Skip to main content.
