The integration of voice and data networks is creating a fundamental change in the telecommunications and data industries. This change means better phone service, lower prices, new features, less maintenance, and more choices, leading to a complete convergence of the data networking and telecommunications industries into a single community. With all this growth and change, network engineers and managers need specific information on how to integrate and configure packetized voice networks. Integrating Voice and Data Networks is the one reference manual you need to learn how to integrate traditional voice technology into existing Cisco data networks. Integrating Voice and Data Networks is both a conceptual reference and a practical how-to book that bridges the gap between existing telephony networks and the new world of packetized voice over data networks.
By converging these previously disparate networks into a single, unified network, you can begin to realize savings in multiple areas, including lower total cost of ownership, toll savings, and increased productivity. Cisco AVVID enables you to move from maintaining a separate data network and a closed, proprietary voice PBX system to maintaining one open and standards-based, converged network for all your data, voice, and video needs. Cisco Personal Assistant provides rule-based call routing, speech-enabled directory dialing, voice message browsing, and simple ad hoc conferencing. By way of contrast, interactive and computer-to-computer data transactions tend to be "bursty" in nature, and this has given rise to the development of packet-switching methods for data communications. The dichotomous nature of these two major traffic classes and the apparent conflict between the types of network services they require has resulted in the deployment of separate military communications facilities for voice and data.
Integrating Voice, Video, and E-mail Data Packet Traffic over Wireless TDMA Channels with Errors
In this paper, we explore, via an extensive simulation study, the performance of a new medium access-control MAC protocol when integrating voice, video, and e-mail data packet traffic over a wireless channel of high capacity, with errors. Depending on the number of video users admitted into the system, our protocol varies a the request bandwidth dedicated to resolving the voice users contention and b the probability with which the base station grants information slots to voice users, in order to preserve full priority for video traffic. We evaluate the voice and video packet-dropping probabilities for various voice and video load conditions and the average e-mail data message delays. Our scheme achieves high aggregate channel throughput in all cases of traffic load despite the introduction of errors in the system. Download to read the full article text. Nanda, D.
