Compared to atomic absorption spectrophotometers, in which the excitation temperature of air-acetylene flame measures to K, the excitation temperature of argon ICP is to K, which efficiently excites many elements. Also, using inert gas argon makes oxides and nitrides harder to be generated.

Optical emission spectrometry involves applying electrical energy in the form of spark generated between an electrode and a metal sample, whereby the vaporized atoms are brought to a high energy state within a so-called "discharge plasma". These excited atoms and ions in the discharge plasma create a unique emission spectrum specific to each element, as shown at right. Thus, a single element generates numerous characteristic emission spectral lines. Therefore, the light generated by the discharge can be said to be a collection of the spectral lines generated by the elements in the sample. This light is split by a diffraction grating to extract the emission spectrum for the target elements.

Principle of Optical Emission Spectrometry

ICP-OES Inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry is a technique in which the composition of elements in mostly water-dissolved samples can be determined using plasma and a spectrometer. The technique has been commercially available since and thanks to its reliability, multi-element options and high throughput, it has become a widely applied in both routine research as in more specific analysis purposes. The solution to analyze is conducted by a peristaltic pump though a nebulizer into a spray chamber. The produced aerosol is lead into an argon plasma. Plasma is the forth state of matter, next to the solid, liquid and gaseous state. In the ICP-OES the plasma is generated at the end of a quarts torch by a cooled induction coil through which a high frequency alternate current flows. As a consequence, an alternate magnetic field is induced which accelerated electrons into a circular trajectory.

This methodology gives direct insight into questions such as how specific elements of an alloy interact with one another, or how specific additives in a surface treatment solution will affect different alloying elements or different phases. This paper discusses AESEC instrumentation and presents the basic quantitative relationships between the electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements. A wide range of applications are used to illustrate these relationships including the surface pretreatment of aluminum alloys etching and deoxidation and the passivation of Fe-Cr and Ni-Cr alloys. Aqueous metallic corrosion is an electrochemical phenomenon and much of the theory and experimental techniques for predicting and assessing corrosion are based on the application of electrochemical concepts and techniques for example, see Kelly, et al. As a complement to conventional electrochemical information, we would like to know how do the individual elemental constituents of a material react with the environment?
